Today's Gospel presents us with one of the most powerful and challenging encounters in the ministry of Jesus: the encounter between Jesus and the Canaanite woman. The woman comes to Jesus with a desperate cry: "Have pity on me, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon." She is a mother in pain. She has reached a point where she knows that human strength is no longer enough. She has heard about Jesus, and she believes that He can help her.
Jesus does not immediately answer her. The Gospel tells us that Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. She cries out and there is silence. She asks again and there is no immediate response.

Today's Gospel begins with an interesting detail: Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him while He remained behind to pray. They were not acting on their own. They were following the Lord's instruction. Yet, despite their obedience, they found themselves in the middle of a storm. That is an important lesson for every believer in Christ. Faithfulness to Christ does not exempt us from difficulties. Sometimes we mistakenly believe that if we are doing God's will, life should become easier. But the Gospel tells us otherwise.

Today's Gospel presents one of the most beloved miracles in all of Scripture - the feeding of the five thousand. This miracle is much more than an extraordinary display of Jesus' power. It is a revelation of His compassionate heart, a lesson in discipleship and a foreshadowing of the Eucharist. The Gospel begins with Jesus withdrawing to a deserted place after hearing of the death of John the Baptist. John was not only His cousin but also the one who prepared the way for Him.
Jesus sought solitude to grieve and pray. Yet the crowds followed Him on foot from their towns. Matthew tells us, "His heart was moved with pity for them and He cured their sick."
